Camera Live View Shows a Black Screen or Won't Stream

If the live camera view in your dashboard appears black, frozen, or refuses to load video even though other machines work fine, the camera feed is most likely reaching the server — but the video settings on the camera unit itself are out of the normal range, preventing your browser from decoding it smoothly.

Why This Happens

ArcadePay's live view uses a browser-compatible streaming format. Most ArcadePay Controller camera units are pre-configured at a standard resolution and bitrate. Occasionally — especially after a hardware swap, firmware update, or replacement camera board — the encoder settings drift too high. A stream with too high a resolution or bitrate will fail to play in most browsers even though the server is receiving the feed correctly.

What you'll notice:
  • Camera tile is black or spinning
  • Other machines on the same network stream fine
  • Refreshing the page or switching browsers makes no difference
  • No error message — just no picture

Steps to Try First

  1. Confirm the controller is online — Check the dashboard. If the machine is offline, camera live view won't work until connectivity is restored. See What to Do If Your ArcadePay Controller Goes Offline.
  1. Try a different browser or device — Open the dashboard in Chrome or Edge on a computer (not a mobile browser). Some older mobile browsers have stricter video decoding limits.
  1. Check your network — If you are on a slow or heavily congested connection, a high-bitrate stream may buffer indefinitely. Try on a different network or Wi-Fi band.
  1. Hard-refresh the dashboard — Press `Ctrl + Shift + R` (Windows) or `Cmd + Shift + R` (Mac) to clear cached page state.

If the Camera Is Still Black After These Steps

This usually means the camera board's encoder settings need to be adjusted — which requires a brief remote or on-site reconfiguration. Contact ArcadePay Support and include:

  • Machine name and location
  • Which machine(s) have the black camera (and which ones work, if applicable)
  • A note that you have already tried a different browser and network
We can diagnose the camera feed remotely and walk you through the fix or handle it on our end.
